Which energy grants UK homes can get in each nation
Only certain parts of the UK are covered by each scheme. England and Wales can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, but the Warm Homes: Local Grant only runs in England.
Home Energy Scotland offers Scotland its own grant and loan. Wales offers Nest, a scheme that costs nothing. In Northern Ireland, the Boiler Replacement Scheme is no longer running, so none of the schemes here apply there.
Heat pump grant options
Across England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 towards a heat pump, either air source or ground source. Landlords may apply as well, though you must own the home. No benefits test applies. Our Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide has more detail.
From Home Energy Scotland, Scottish homeowners can get a heat pump grant worth up to £7,500, plus an optional loan with no interest.

Insulation grants for lower income homes
Insulation grants mostly help people with a low income or on benefits. Money from energy suppliers pays for ECO4, a scheme for people on certain benefits. The end date is 31 December 2026, says Ofgem.
In England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant costs you nothing when your household income is normally £36,000 or less per year, says GOV.UK. If you live in Wales, Nest won't charge you anything. The Great British Insulation Scheme is now closed.
EPC grants and why your rating matters
Your EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) gives your home a rating from A down to G. A is the most efficient, G the least. Many schemes give help only if your home has a low letter.
To qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, your home must be rated D, E, F or G. In Scotland, a valid EPC recommending the work is needed for insulation money. Before you apply, check your rating on the EPC register.
What the Warm Homes Plan changes
Home upgrades get £15 billion under the government's Warm Homes Plan. The plan gives the Boiler Upgrade Scheme £2.7 billion to 2030.
Schemes run by energy suppliers are coming to an end. Starting in 2027/28, the plan brings the local grant and social housing fund together into one scheme for low-income homes.
Common questions about energy grants UK
Is a heat pump grant available to me?
Yes, if you own the home, it's in England or Wales, and you're replacing heating from fossil fuels such as gas or oil. There's no income test on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Is being on benefits required to get an energy grant?
No. There's no benefits test for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, nor for the Scottish loan and grant. ECO4 help in private housing, though, does depend on certain benefits.
Do tenants qualify for energy grants?
Yes. If the owner agrees, ECO4 help may reach private tenants on certain benefits. Privately rented homes are covered as well, by Nest in Wales and by the Warm Homes: Local Grant in England.
Can you still apply to the Great British Insulation Scheme?
No. Ofgem says it closed on 31 March 2026. If your application went in before then, ask your energy supplier about it.
